The Importance of Digital Marketing in the New Year
James Lajoie • February 23, 2022

As 2021 comes to an end, and we start into a new year, digital marketing has never been more important. In fact, it’s so important that if you don’t have digital marketing, the chances of your business surviving in 2022 is unlikely.

So, today we’ll look at what got us to this point, why things aren’t going to change anytime soon, and what your business should be doing to get into the world of digital marketing.

Making Our Way to Digital Marketing

We’ve been told that you go where the business exists. It doesn’t make any sense to start a business in the middle of nowhere, where there’s a small population. If you were to do that, then once the newness of your business wears off, chances are your business will collapse.

So, what do people do instead, they go where they can get the most clients in the door. They establish their businesses where the people are.

Today that looks different than it did 50 years ago. If you want to go where the people are, you need to go online. No matter how much you want to fight it, Covid has increased the number of people shopping online. People aren’t leaving their homes anymore; they’re sitting at their computers and seeing ads. The question you should ask now is, is that your product? Well, if you’re not doing any digital marketing, that’s someone else’s ad, someone getting a customer that could have been yours.

Unfortunately, the problem with moving your business online is that you must figure out a way to stand out from all the competition. And you can do just that with proper digital marketing.

The Future is in Digital Marketing

Now you might be saying, well, once Covid ends, people will come back. But the truth is, Covid has taught people the convenience of staying home. Too many other businesses have moved their businesses online too, and even when the pandemic is over, people will take the path of least resistance to the product they want.

If you don’t start utilizing digital marketing, you’re only making it that much harder to keep your business alive. You’re not only competing for business in your community, but you’re also competing against companies across the world. And just having a website won’t get customers to the online portion of your business. You need a way to get people to look at your website over the potential 1000s of other similar options on the market.

And how do you make sure people see your product? You use digital marketing!

What is Digital Marketing?

So, what is digital marketing? Digital marketing takes many forms: online ads, social media, and blogging are all types of digital marketing. For example, this blog is a form of digital marketing. When we share it on social media, that’s yet another type of digital marketing. And when you pay to have your ads online, whether, on search engines or other websites, that too is digital marketing.

Any form of getting your product or service in front of someone holding a smartphone, tablet, or computer is digital marketing. That’s where your business should be because that’s where your customers are. They’re behind screens, scrolling for the next best product. If you aren’t using digital marketing, you’re missing out on all those potential clients.

Over time, I’ve noticed something consistent across different businesses. When marketing isn’t working, it’s rarely because nothing is being done. It’s usually because the effort is out of alignment. Most companies tend to lean heavily in one direction. They either focus on short-term results or long-term brand. And the challenge is, those two things are meant to work together, not separately.
